Mary,
Thanks for reading and for writing. Experts pretty much agree that the younger the child, the better the chance for a meaningful and mutually satisfying bond between kids and stepmothers or stepmother figures. On the other hand, I interviewed several women for whom this was not the case. The reason: mothers who exacerbated their kids' loyalty binds. No matter how young the kid is when he or she meets stepmom, and how open to a relationship, if a mother is sabotaging that by communicating that she doesn't like dad's wife or girlfriend, or that she is miserable because they are together, this child will feel split down the middle. And these conflicts of loyalty do not often break a stepmother's way.

Hope you will keep reading and commenting.

Stepchild as the new it bag: brilliant. This post touches on something I wondered after reading the Gisele entry: how will Baby Moynahan/Brady likely feel about his stepmother, who has known him since he was in utero—somebody else's utero, but still? I know the younger a child is when step-parents enter the picture, the more likely the chance for a close bond, but this situation seems fraught with its own complications. Or maybe not. I am curious.
