Thank you for this book. It is spot-on. A confusing difference in my case is
That for the first 6 or 7 years I was very close to my stepkids- raising them in
The complete absence of their mother and with their dad working 100/hrs a week
When his schedule changed and he was home more- boom– the dynamics described
In this book kicked in. It’s been very painful, but I’ve learned to detach. It helps to focus on my own life and stand back from THEIR strife. I care, but don’t take on their problems anymore because responsibility without authority = hell. Thank you so much.

Dear Kelly,
I have heard stories like yours before, and your situation does NOT sound easy. I like your formula that responsibility without authority = hell, and I agree 100% with your strategy to detach.
I’m wondering how old your stepkids are and, frankly, hoping they will be out of the house soon for your sake. I hope you will have your husband read the chapter in my book called “Him”; it might just help him understand himself and you a little better.
Good luck and don’t be a stranger!
best wishes,
wednesday
