Why the 2010 Census Matters for Stepfamilies–and Stepmothers

Please check out my newest piece for the Huffington Post on stepfamilies and the 2010 U.S. Census. Without accurate numbers, there won’t be enough research–or support.

HOld on a second. So my husband’s kids are here half the time, plus almost all holidays, plus all of summer vacation but in a census we are not a stepfamily because of the custody issue?

It’s ridiculous. So then the only stepfamilies that are official are the ones with custody? Or kids there “most of the time?” It makes no sense!!

This is just one of the many ways we stepcouples and stepfamilies don’t count. IT’S NOT FAIR! We try so hard to be recognized and supported as a legitimate family system. Thanks, Wednesday, for bringing this info out into the open.

are you kidding me??? so the only stepfamily is the custodial/more time one? my stepkids spend one day less with meand their dad so we’re not an “official” stepfamily?

doesnt that mean that the numbers are off by HALF or something? it’s hard for me to understand why they would count this way excluding half of all stepfamilies?!
